What exactly is the difference is between art and craft?
Both art and craft involve creativity, the use of tools and materials and lots of imagination. But, when we look a little closer, there are some interesting distinctions.
Art
Art tends to focus on self-expression and emotion, exploring ideas, feelings, and concepts. Art is more about the process of creating than the end product. Jenny Saville and Cindy Sherman are both great examples of female artists. If we look at there work we can see there personal vision, asking us to see the world in new ways. In short, art is less about the final product and more about what it says.
Craft
Craft is about skill and functionality. There’s a practical side to craft, involving the execution of a specific skill. Pottery, silver/blacksmithing, wood turning and textile work are all crafts. They follow specific techniques and traditions passed down over time. The focus is on creating something useful, with an emphasis on mastering the skills. Craft can be both functional and beautiful. William Morris said ‘have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.
Art and Craft
The line between art and craft is often blurred. A craftsperson’s work can of course carry deep personal meaning. Artistic works are often created in a way that inspires ore. Art and craft give us a chance to express ourselves, connect with others, and be creative. Making something that didn’t exist before is something that I love, silver on the bench or paint on canvas.
Whether you’re making art or craft embrace the creative journey. It all matters!
